Courtenay Ennis is not a friendly—no, wait, he’s a very friendly vocal teacher who has worked with well-known musical productions such as Rent, Les Miserables, and Evita.
We have to admit that we were a little scared at first because he seemed more suited for more experienced singers.
However, we later found out that he also coaches young singers because he has run many high school theater programs, including at Vancouver College, Rockridge Secondary, and Carson Graham.
This somehow eased our minds to know that he’s able to tailor his teaching methods to different skill levels. In our opinion, this makes him a versatile vocal coach.
Now, Courtenay Ennis uses the Connect, Sustain, and Improve (CSI) method, which uses personalized exercises with song work, so you can expect that his coaching style is adaptable to different genres of music.
That said, we’re a bit bummed that he doesn’t offer complimentary introduction sessions, as interested learners would have to pay CAD 10 for this service. Even so, we believe Courtenay Ennis deserves to be on our list.
His extensive experience coaching students with different skill levels, combined with his flexible coaching style, assured us that he offers one of the best singing lessons in Vancouver.

Taron Hall is a certified voice teacher with the Institute of Vocal Advancement, and he coaches singers of all ages! We think Taron’s biggest asset is his passion, as he’s been singing since the young age of 7.
He even started his own band when he was 12 years old and wrote his own songs! We found this very impressive because we think his dedication to music will inspire his students.
Now, we found it convenient that he offers both in-person and virtual lessons as this allows for flexibility for students who may not be able to attend in-person lessons.
Speaking of flexibility, we also appreciate that he has adaptable lesson durations and scheduling as you can book 30-minute to 4-hour singing lessons so students can customize their sessions based on their availability.
Unfortunately, Taron’s schedule is frequently packed and it doesn’t help that he doesn’t teach on weekends.
Still, we liked that he provides video tips on how to add vocal flavor, proper posture, and many more that learners can access outside classes.
Overall, we think Taron Hall offers one of the best singing lessons in Vancouver because of his passion for music and flexible singing lessons.

Spencer Welch is better for experienced singers because he teaches advanced techniques and focuses on improving his students’ voices, which requires a certain level of singing skill and experience.
While he can teach beginners, he advised us that it might be too much to study with him at first and that it’s worth considering studying with one of their associate instructors.
We found it particularly appealing that Spencer uses the same singing technique that well-known singers like Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Kelly Clarkson, and many others use.
This technique is based on freedom, ease, presence, and flexibility, and we liked that it gives students enough room to find their own voice.
It also adds to his credibility that he’s a Certified Master Teacher and the Director of Education for the Institute for Vocal Advancement (IVA), which is a respected organization that trains vocal teachers and performance coaches.
Having said that, we’re not big fans of the fact that they don’t offer introductory sessions as their instructors have limited availability.
Despite that, we liked that they provide one free lesson if you prepay for a series of lessons in advance.
In sum, if you’re an experienced singer that’s looking to further improve your vocal range and techniques, we think you should consider taking Spencer Welch’s classes.

Audacious Vocals was founded by Dorcas Hope-Gill. We were immediately impressed by the fact that she has been singing for more than 25 years and she has sung in solo, groups, and even live choral broadcasts!
We believe that her diverse range of experience makes her very adaptable and able to accommodate the different singing styles of learners.
What you need to know about her lessons is that she focuses heavily on building her students’ confidence by helping them combine emotion, style, and tone.
She also encourages her students to try out different genres and singing styles, which helps them find their own voice.
However, if there’s one drawback that we’ve observed, it’s that they don’t offer shorter lessons, as they can only do 40-minute lessons or more.
We also noticed that they only provide in-person lessons, which may be a bit inconvenient for students who’d rather take lessons at home.
Still, we think it would be easy for students to get to her home studio because it’s close to public transportation and she has a parking spot just for her pupils.
All in all, Audacious Vocals definitely provides one of the best singing lessons in Vancouver because of their focus on building the confidence of their students before anything else.

Horizon School of Music is a music school that offers vocal and musical instrument lessons such as drums, piano, vocal, guitar, and many more.
They give first-time students free consultations to talk about their needs and expectations, which we liked.
We also particularly liked how spacious, well-equipped, and well-lit their classrooms are, and we think you would too. This is good news for those who plan to take in-studio singing lessons, but for those who’d rather learn remotely, they also offer just that.
It’s worth noting that their singing instructors have extensive experience in writing, performing, recording, and teaching music, as this boosted our confidence that they’re able to use this combination of skills to provide effective lessons.
They also have a large team of teachers, so this removed the worry about them not having the ability to cater to different schedules of students.

The Fabiana Katz Voice Studio is a good overall choice for those who are looking for singing lessons that cover both the fundamentals and music theory. It’s especially a great choice if you’re looking to learn about the art of choral conducting.
We loved that its instructor is one of the most experienced voice teachers on our list, and has a decorated track record of certifications. This greatly benefits those who plan to learn professionally with the goal of performing at some point.
It’s worth noting its voice lessons feature both a broad range of teaching techniques, but still include a comprehensive understanding of music theory. We’re still confident that they’d be able to effectively provide meaningful lessons to a wide range of proficiency levels.
We appreciate that its music lessons are offered throughout the week and can be done either once a week or twice a week. It’s also great that it can accommodate irregular schedules.
We were disappointed that they don’t have a large team of teachers which means that it can be difficult to book their services. This isn’t necessarily a problem, though, if you’re still looking for high-quality, one-on-one sessions.

A true community!
“Coja Music Academy is true community. I recommend them to anyone who is looking to expand their musical horizons. Wonderful instructors. As a member of the Classic Rock Choir – try it out! It is so fun!” – Maegan S.
Fantastic teachers!
“I started taking piano and bass lessons at Coja a few years ago and continue to enjoy my weekly lesson. James is a fantastic teacher who makes music lessons fun and engaging, without putting any pressure on the end result. I only started music lessons in my late 30’s/early 40’s so the progress is slow, but James is always patient and paces the lessons according to my abilities. He explains everything clearly, and makes sure I understand before moving on. He does a great job of simplifying the theory, and makes sure we incorporate the songs and bands that I enjoy. Thanks Coja!” – Stephaine L.
