6. Chronic Ink

Chronic Ink started from a little-known studio at the Pacific Mall in Markham in 2008. But back then, this city wasn’t yet a go-to spot for tattoos, and the co-founders, Ricky Fung and Tristen Zhang, were the new kids on the block. Eventually, they met tattoo artist Joanna Roman, who became their co-owner and first female partner.
In 2010, they decided to get a booth at the NIX, Toronto’s tattoo convention. And since this showcases tonnes of global talent, this reassured them of their skills. They didn’t have clients yet, so Zhang decided to tattoo Fung and entered the Tattoo of the Day contest. They unexpectedly ended up being among the 2 finalists—both so great, the judges couldn’t decide. And whether it was luck or destiny, a coin flip solidified their win.
At present, this ink studio has 10 locations globally. The founders also offer apprentice programmes to impart their skills and knowledge to young artists, breaking barriers in a once-closed field of tattooing.
Professional, Patient, and Attentive
“I had an amazing experience with Justin and Kyle. Justin was incredibly helpful in coordinating my tattoo appointment. Despite some email issues, he made sure to stay in constant communication, relaying messages between Kyle and me. His patience and dedication ensured everything was clear and organized. Kyle, the tattoo artist, was equally fantastic. He was professional, patient, and attentive to every detail I wanted. The result was exactly what I envisioned, and I couldn’t be happier. Thank you both for making this such a smooth and pleasant experience!”

7. Pacific Rose Tattoo

Formerly Gastown Tattoo Parlour, Pacific Rose Tattoo was launched in 2011 by a diverse group of Vancouver artists who want to make original custom tattoos in an inclusive space. It’s led by owner-artist Mitch Kirilo who shaped the shop’s aesthetic and name with his passion for Japanese-inspired and surreal realism tattoos.
Kirilo was born and raised in and around Vancouver. When he was young, he fell in love with his father’s prison-style tattoos, inspiring his work today. While other kids sold lemonade, he and his brother set up a small tattoo booth to draw on their friends with pens.
Presently, his tattoo shop provides a wide range of offerings, from traditional and Japanese to illustrative, fine-line, folk, and realism tattoo designs. It’s also known for its fundraisers and donations to support Indigenous and houseless communities.

8. Sacred Heart Tattoo

Established by Adam Sky, Sacred Heart Tattoo has been in the ink business since 1993. But in 1997, the ownership was transitioned to Greta Pauls and David Green. Pauls has helped the studio evolve and grow since the late 90s, while Green is known for his work in both colour and black-and-grey large custom pieces since 1996.
The shop’s past locations span all around Vancouver—10th and Alma, West End on Davie Street, Grenville Street, and Downtown’s Nelson Street, which the owners say made it a true ‘Van City’ original.
In 2011, the owners reworked their business model to a single studio so they could focus on the art and craft of tattooing. Today, they continue to strive for a relaxed, communicative space for both artists and clients.

9. Liquid Amber Tattoo & Art Collective

Liquid Amber Tattoo & Art Collective is a queer-women-owned tattoo shop in Vancouver, promoting safety and diversity since 2001. Co-founders Justina Kervel and Luvia Petersen got the inspiration from a trip to Paris in 2000. They met tattoo artist Phillipine of Kaplan Art Studio, and this ignited their vision to elevate women in the tattoo industry.
Women tattoo artists were rare in Vancouver in 2001, so Kervel and Petersen seized the chance and opened shop in the Kitsilano area. After a few years, they relocated to Burrard and Davie and then to the Gastown district. Soon, they moved to the bright, cultural neighborhood of Commercial Drive and stayed.
Since she began, Kervel has shared her tattooing knowledge with countless apprentices and artists — many of whom went on to join the Liquid Amber team and continue to work alongside her today.
Today, this ink studio also offers professional piercings by an APP-certified piercer (Association of Professional Piercers), and regularly hosts ART SOCIAL markets that celebrate and support local visual artists and community connection.
