Also known as Cà phê trứng, this combination of egg cream and coffee from Hanoi is a delight for anyone who wants a custard-y twist on their morning brew!

1. Merci Beaucoup Café

Contact Details: +1 604 255 3220, [email protected]
Operating Hours: Monday – Sunday: 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Closed on Wednesdays
Don’t get misled by the name–if you’re looking for Vietnamese cuisine while at Commercial Drive, Merci Beaucoup Café might be a surprise. This spot has grown to be a local hotspot for anyone who appreciates a good banh mi and egg coffee.
Merci Beaucoup’s menu spans multiple Vietnamese classics, whether you’re craving pho or some lemongrass treats. Their egg coffee might appeal to choco-lovers out there: we loved the chocolatey aftertaste from the cocoa powder topping the egg foam!
The café supposedly got its name from the Parisian feel of the space, and we felt that way on our own visit to the shop. The café’s ambiance was pleasant, not to mention clean. It’s a good spot to slow down and have a light meal.
The shop is quite small, with limited seating and similarly small portion sizes. Since their egg coffee is only served for dine-in customers, we’d advise visiting early!
On the bright side, we did notice that they served food and drinks quickly, making it handy for short meals. If you’re passing by Commercial Drive in the mood for a quick cup, then we recommend swinging by!
It was better than I was expecting
“I’ve wanted to try egg coffee for years, so when I saw that they serve it here, I jumped at the chance. My parents are obsessed with coffee and eggs, we used to be egg farmers, so I took them with me to try it. It was better than I was expecting!”
– Mr. Seth Goetzke, Google Review
A cafe that makes an authentic egg coffee
“Finally found a cafe that makes an authentic egg coffee! Banh mi was also great – bread was super crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside.”

If you want to spend lunchtime surrounded by pop culture and have a fondness for cute, then Broye Café and Bakery might be up your alley. This cozy café rose for its Japanese-Vietnamese fusion menu, featuring mostly sweets and coffee.
The main highlights at Broye are their line of Japanese sweets and pastries paired with Vietnamese coffee drinks. Their egg coffee could come hot or iced. There are also options for toppings, such as cheese, boba, or ice cream scoops.
On our visit, we were struck by the look of the place. Regulars we managed to chat with pointed to the pastry displays and presentation. Some are even styled after favorite pop culture characters like Totoro.
We also appreciate the staff’s pleasant demeanor and flexibility with orders. We appreciate that they offer milk alternatives for some of their drinks, including the Vietnamese egg coffee.
That being said, we did experience a longer wait for our orders. It might be a little difficult for people who want to grab a quick lunch before school or work.
A few of the regulars we spoke to mentioned that this is also the case for pre-ordered items, so staying is a must.
Loved that they had milk alternatives
“The best ubemisu latte and vietnamese egg coffee that Vancouver has to offer! Loved that they had milk alternatives such as oat milk. Our barista was so kind, and made our drinks and food quick!”
– Ms. Stephanie L, Google Review

If you’ve been exploring the culinary scene in Vancouver, you might have heard of the Lunch Lady. The restaurant and its Vietnamese menu have gained prominence since first opening in 2020, making it a recent but rising name in Vancouver.
Carrying on the legacy of the late Chef Nguyen Thi Thanh, their menu features rotating offerings of classic Vietnamese dishes. Their egg coffee is made with a condensed milk sabayon, preserving both the bitter coffee and the sweet foam.
Being a full restaurant, we initially thought the Lunch Lady had an intimidating menu at first. Thankfully, their staff is very kind and responsive, easily helping us with any new Vietnamese flavors on offer.
We also noticed their willingness to accommodate various customer requests, such as choosing to omit condensed milk in the Vietnamese egg coffee or adding more beef to the soup. We think this is handy for any food sensitivities.
That being said, The Lunch Lady does have a fairly small space to host a large number of tables, making for cramped seating arrangements.
Additionally, there’s a one-hour restriction on dining–so we’d recommend saving The Lunch Lady for a scheduled get-together.
You can always opt out of condensed milk
“Line up starts early, its not always easy to get a seat later during the day. Beef brisket and eggs breakfast shouldn’t be missed. Hanoi egg iced coffee is a bit on a sweet side, but you can always opt out of condensed milk.”
– Mr. Eugene Shmitsman, Google Review
The most memorable experience of our meal
“First of all, I have to say the egg coffee was hands-down, the most memorable experience of our meal. Coming from the motherland I have high expectation for the coffee and Lunch Lady did not disappoint.”

4. Hanoi Drip Coffee

Address: 3779 Rupert St, Vancouver, BC V5M 3W2
Contact Details: +1 604 336 7747, [email protected]
Operating Hours: Monday – Saturday: 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Sunday: 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM
Looking for a café focused on Vietnamese coffee specifically? Look no further than Hanoi Drip Coffee. The café offers a full menu of classic coffee, becoming a favorite spot among locals for a brew.
The highlight of the menu is definitely their signature phin drip coffees. They offer everything from classic black coffee to pandan lattes and even salted cream coffee.
Their Vietnamese egg coffee was delightfully creamy, with a generous helping of velvety egg foam. It tasted just right too, not too sweet nor too bitter.
What immediately stood out to us was the sizes of their portions: for both drinks and the banh mi they serve. Their drinks come in 16-oz cups, which had us nursing our orders for the next few hours.
They even offer bulk orders for takeout, making it easier to bring back coffee for your friends or family. We find this convenient for events or group projects alike.
That said, we did notice that the café is quite small, with limited seating to enjoy your drinks. You might have to wait a bit before you can sit down.
Some customers also let us know that they serve plenty of ice in their cold drinks, which dilutes them somewhat. If this isn’t your style, then we recommend letting the barista know when ordering.
It has an egg cream and not just egg yolk
“Absolutely amazing coffee! With hesitation I tried the egg coffee but was pleasantly surprised! It has an egg cream and not just egg yolk and if you ever had proper tiramisu, it tastes just like that.”
– Mr. Shehroz Khan, Google Review
Expect a caffeine and flavor explosion
“Amazing sandwiches, and the coffee is REALLY good! Especially the egg coffee and Ube coconut. They’re made with what tastes like robusta beans, so expect a caffeine and flavor explosion.”
– Mr. Kirill Volguin, Google Review
5. Saigon Bites

Address: 1673 Renfrew St, Vancouver, BC V5K 4E1
Contact Details: +1 778 532 6383, [email protected]
Operating Hours: Monday – Thursday: 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM, Friday: 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM, Saturday: 9:00 AM to 8:30 PM, Sunday: 9:00 AM to 7:30 PM
Coming in as one of the more recent names, Saigon Bites has started garnering acclaim around Vancouver for its authentic Vietnamese menu and fun atmosphere. We’d be pretty remiss not to swing by on our search for egg coffee.
The menu was larger than we expected. Banh mi and vermicelli bowls were popular savory picks. Their Vietnamese egg coffee can be hot, iced, or with varying levels of coffee strength. Perfect for caffeine lovers out there!
On our own visit, we were pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere in the café. It was playful and fun, with modern decor and checkerboard wraps for their banh mi, making it perfect for friendly get-togethers!
Customers we managed to chat with also praised the freshness of the ingredients: not just in the savory offerings, but even with their coffee! The egg foam used in the Vietnamese egg coffee is all mixed and made in-house!
That being said, we did notice their items to be a bit pricier. Regulars we’ve spoken to have found their combos for banh mi and drinks weren’t too budget-friendly. Serving sizes are a bit small too, so you really want a combo for most orders.
The egg coffee is a must
“Absolutely delicious, the bread is perfectly crispy, the lemongrass beef is tender and super flavourful, and the egg coffee is a must. The atmosphere and service was lovely, I’ll definitely be back.”
– Mr. Inigo Hainsworth, Google Review l
Creamy and salty taste blends with the bitterness of coffee
