Types of Martial Arts: We selected martial arts schools that offer a diverse range of disciplines. This includes Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Karate, and kickboxing, among others.
Class Size: We considered martial arts schools that focus on maintaining small class sizes, enabling coaches to provide equal attention to each student.
Facility: We checked if the martial arts schools maintain their facilities and training gear in a clean condition.
Safety: We assessed how they ensure their students' safety during practice or training. We also checked if they use protective gear during sparring.
We initially signed up for a martial arts class just to shed a few pounds and get a good workout at least once a week. However, after learning the discipline and mastering a few drills, we found ourselves attending more than once a week.
After each session, we felt more confident, especially when walking alone late at night. The best part is that you can experience this transformation too, as this city boasts some of the finest martial arts schools available.
If you’re ready to train and learn self-defense, continue reading this blog as we share with you a list of our favorite martial arts classes in Vancouver.
How much do martial arts classes cost in Vancouver?
On average, the cost of martial arts classes in Vancouver can range from $140 to $200 per month. Meanwhile, private classes or one-on-one programs may start at $60 per hour.

The gym has become my second home
“I have been a student under Mr. Franco since I started my martial arts journey in 2005 at four years old. The incredible training at FKP MMA has helped shape the person that I am today. Not only have I gained the skill and capabilities to defend myself but also the confidence to succeed in my personal and professional life.
Currently, at 24 years old. I have earned my black belt rank at FKP MMA. I have competed in many submission grappling and kickboxing tournaments. I have also become an instructor at the gym and assist coaching with the same classes I used to train in as a kid!
The coaches and training partners at FKP have become family to me. The gym has become my second home. The culture and community of this facility is second to none. Mr. Franco has created a community of like minded individuals who love to train hard and become the best version of themselves. No matter what I have going on in my life, I know when I show up at FKP MMA, I can leave it all at the door and focus on training, coaching, and self improvement. I truly believe, “NO MAN OR MACHINE WILL TRAIN YOU BETTER”.”

All very patient with the kids
“I love FKP MMA. It’s the place to go if you want the best workout you can get in 1 hour and have fun doing it too, but once you get beyond wanting just a workout, it’s a great place to advance into MMA. All of the coaches/trainers were all previously students of Mr. Franco and they are all amazing fighters and trainers. The FKP MMA kids program is simply the best you will find in BC. Mr. Franco and the coaches are all very patient with the kids and makes learning fun. The best part is when you train at FKP MMA you become a part of a family!”

The Little Ninja class has been a fantastic experience for our kids. The instructors are incredibly patient and know how to engage kids with a perfect mix of fun and focus. The small class sizes mean every child gets plenty of attention, and they’re amazing at adapting to each child’s unique needs. (Bonus: They also accept autism funding for families who qualify!)

Vancouver Martial Arts is an excellent martial arts school for families, offering multiple classes for kids and adults that allow you to learn different disciplines together.
You can expect to attend structured classes if you’re enrolling in this martial arts school. We appreciate how they ensure coverage of warm-ups, technique breakdowns, and sparring sessions.
It’s also a great place where your kids can develop their leadership skills. Here, you can expect the students to take turns leading techniques and explaining drills, which really helped improve their communication skills.
In fact, kids who move up in rank are expected to teach those kids in lower belts, ensuring they become good role models to the younger ones.
And yes, you can be paired with different training partners from all skill levels, which will help you further improve your skills.
However, we heard that some students feel too overwhelmed whenever they receive messages or calls reminding them of their upcoming sessions.
And since this martial arts school is known for its emphasis on discipline, it may not be ideal for those who cannot commit to attending classes consistently.
In fact, if you miss a session, you can expect your coach to assign you more challenging drills on your next visit.
Pros
- Focuses on improving strong leadership skills
- Offers classes for both kids and adults
Cons
- Follow-up messages or calls could be too overwhelming
- Not open on Sundays
Builds students’ confidence and discipline
“Vancouver marital arts has been an amazing place for my son’s confidence, discipline and focus. Master Alan runs an amazing program encouraging the kids to always strive for their best and put in their best effort. We are so happy to have found a home for our kiddo at Vancouver Marital Arts”

Great leadership program for kids
“Vancouver Martial Arts has been an excellent place for my child. Master Alan not only teaches taekwondo but also stresses the importance of concentration, focus, respect, gratitude and teamwork in martial arts and life. The leadership program is an invaluable part of the program to help build my child’s confidence and leadership skills. My child enjoys the program so much that I have now joined the adult class so that we can learn together. I encourage all to join, you will learn so much more than just kicking and punching. Thank you Master Alan!”

Lions MMA is our go-to spot for more intense and community-driven martial arts classes. Here, you can expect your coaches and your teammates to push you to level up every session.
So yes, if you easily get overwhelmed, then we suggest looking for another martial arts school for you or your kids, at least the one that’s more friendly for beginners.
Well, you can also avail of their free week trial just to see if this martial school is for you. The best part is that these free sessions will already give you a good introduction to the basic techniques you’ll need to learn before you fully commit.
Nonetheless, the people here are very supportive and inclusive. So you’ll really feel like you’re one big family whenever you’re here at Lions MMA.
What we love about this martial arts school is that the instructors break down techniques, especially for first-timers. Expect your first sessions to focus primarily on the basics, ensuring a gradual progression.
We’ve also heard that the coaches introduce sparring and rolling during the initial stages, which could feel a little intense for newbies. However, don’t worry because they ensure that you are matched with a partner who has a similar experience to help you smoothly ease into the drills.
Apart from keeping the facilities clean, the gym also has a big space, which allows it to hold large classes.
Pros
- Offers classes exclusive to women
- Encourages real sparring
- Expect practical application, even during the initial stages
Cons
- May be a little intense for beginners

“Thanks to instructor Amir, I Had such a good workout while in Vancouver. When I Google searched, some other gyms only have evening classes, but Lions MMA not only offers day classes but also has so many classes during the day. I joined their 12-1pm class within 1 hour of my initial search. Technic was good, workout was hard :):). Staff is friendly. Strongly recommended! Diaz Combat Sports is a martial arts school that offers classes for both beginners and intermediates.
Here, you receive well-structured classes, allowing the coaches to focus more on teaching the fundamentals, with live applications incorporated occasionally.
We also appreciate how the coaches take the time to explain the techniques clearly, so you can expect all sessions not to feel rushed.
What’s great about this martial arts school is that it offers women-only classes. So, for ladies who get intimidated by having men around (even male coaches) or simply prefer a safe space to train, this could be a significant advantage.
They also offer several classes during the day, making it easier for you to find one that fits your personal schedule. They even offer multiple classes at night, making them perfect for students and workers who wish to train on weeknights.
However, their weekend slots are quite limited, so make sure to sign up early to secure a spot. Additionally, they don’t have late classes on weekends, so you really need to allot time during the day.
And we have good news for those who wish to enroll in a boxing class: no need to buy your own set of gloves, as you’ll get them for free upon signing up here at Diaz Combat Sports.
Pros
- Offers beginner and intermediate classes
- Well-kept equipment
- Has multiple classes offered in a day
- Provides a set of gloves upon sign-up
Cons
- Limited weekend classes
- Changing rooms could feel a bit cramped
Friendly atmosphere
“My husband has always loved kickboxing, but I was a complete beginner. We had a hard time finding a place that offered both beginner and intermediate classes—until we found DCS. It’s hands down the best gym we’ve visited! They offer intro classes and are incredibly welcoming and helpful. We’re just finishing our first week and already feel at home. The instructors are amazing, the classes are fantastic, and everyone is so friendly. I’d absolutely recommend DCS to anyone—even if you have zero experience like me. They’re super patient and skilled!”

Courteous and helpful staff
“First things first, the attitude when you walk in the door is simply great. All the staff are courteous and helpful. The quality of the training itself is very high. I’m a boxer, but I know that extends to their other programs as well. As far as the facility goes, the equipment is well maintained and they’ve got all the right stuff. Plus, you could eat off the floor it’s so clean in there. I’ve been bouncing around between coaches for some time now and it’s nice to finally land in a solid spot. Whether you’re looking to get in/stay in shape, compete at a high level, or get the family introduced to the martial arts; there’s a place for everybody here.”

For those looking for a martial arts school that is open very early until late at night every day of the week, then District Warrior should be at the top of your list.
It’s also great that their group sizes are kept small, allowing the coaches to give each student sufficient attention. In fact, you can expect the coaches to come closer to correct your moves.
One of the coaches in District Warrior, Ali, is known for being tough during classes. Nonetheless, you can still expect him to keep his sessions enjoyable and motivating.
What we like most about Coach Ali is that he also sends us reminders about our upcoming classes. He would even let us do certain drills at home, helping us stay on track while we’re not in the gym.
And, oh, they’ve just recently added yoga. If you want a good stretch after your martial arts class, you can conveniently have it all under one roof. We’ve also heard that the coaches are trying to enhance the gym by adding more classes, so keep an eye out for that.
Just take note that parking here could be a little difficult at times. While they have a designated parking lot for their guests, non-clients often leave their cars, which makes it difficult for gym-goers to secure a parking spot.

Coach Ali and Coach Amir are absolutely amazing, they’re not just skilled and knowledgeable, but also incredibly patient and passionate about what they do. They push you to be your best while making sure you’re learning proper technique and staying safe. Every session feels like progress, and they make the grind actually fun.
Highly recommend this gym if you’re looking for real results and a supportive community. Can’t imagine training anywhere else.”

Checks on clients’ recovery after class
“I’ve had an amazing experience with coach Ali, doing Muaythai and Muayfit for about a year now. He pushes me everyday to be a better version of myself. He follows up even the next day to make sure recovery went well. They have great recommendations for protein powders and different supplements. They provide the best quality merchandise at the gym as well as the best coaching system. The gym overall is quite big, they have showers and they disinfect after every session. If you’re thinking about losing weight, becoming healthier, getting good at MMA sports, look no further!”

You can still enrol your kids in certain martial arts classes even during the school year, thanks to Gracie Barra Vancouver’s after-school program.
You don’t even have to worry about logistics, as the team will pick them up from school and will even take them home after class.
And if you want to stay updated, you can expect this martial arts school to give you multiple updates during the session, complete with photos too. They also use an app called Brightwheel, so you can see exactly what your child is doing during class.
For those who want to take martial arts to the next level, you may also consider allowing your child to attend additional practices once a week. Meanwhile, if you want to test the waters before fully committing, just take advantage of this center’s free trials.
We were quite amazed when we saw older kids from advanced classes function as junior coaches. It just shows that it’s a great environment where the kids get to learn leadership skills too.

They’re firm but fun and they know how to keep the kids interested. They walk around and do one on one to make sure they are properly executing the move.”
