In the Squamish language, Bowen Island is referred to as Nex̱wlélex̱wm, which translates to “Fast Drumming Ground.” This name originates from the rhythmic sounds produced by the ocean as it flows through the island’s northern region, including Finisterre Island.

Situated within the West Vancouver School District, Bowen Island is home to a single public educational facility known as Bowen Island Community School. This school offers comprehensive education from kindergarten through to grade 7. 

Upon reaching high school age, students from Bowen Island make their way to West Vancouver, where they have the option to attend West Vancouver Secondary School, Sentinel Secondary School, or Rockridge Secondary School.

On Bowen Island, the primary modes of transportation are private vehicles and hitchhiking. It has a somewhat limited bus service that operates on a few TransLink routes, with schedules coordinated to coincide with certain ferry departures:

  • Route 280 Bluewater/Snug Cove
  • Route 281 Eagle Cliff/Snug Cove
  • Route 282 Mount Gardner/Snug Cove (Weekends and Holidays only)

Best Time to Go

The best time to go to Bowen Island is from mid-July through August, when you can enjoy the finest weather for outdoor pursuits, featuring pleasantly mild and dry temperatures. But, it’s also the busiest time on the island.

If you’re open to sacrificing a bit of the weather’s perfection to escape the crowds, you can visit during October to March. During these times, the island tends to be more serene, and accommodations often come cheaper.

How to Get to Bowen Island

  • By Bus: From downtown Vancouver, board the West Vancouver Blue Buses 250 and 257 Horseshoe Bay Express to Horseshoe Bay. From there, ride the BC Ferries’ service to Bowen Island (approx. 20 minute travel time).
  • By car: From downtown Vancouver, drive towards W Pender Street and follow BC-1A N and BC 99 to Horseshoe Bay Drive in West Vancouver. Then, take exit 2 from B-99 N and take Marine Drive to Horseshoe Bay.

Note:

If you’re thinking of bringing your car along to Bowen Island, expect to pay approximately $30. Simply drive your vehicle onto the Queen of Capilano at Horseshoe Bay.

Want our advice? Give in to the hype and order the tapas. Be it octopus, eggplant, or chorizo, you can’t make a wrong choice. If you’re fortunate enough to dine with a group, we recommend exploring the menu and sampling as much as you fancy.

The Snug Cafe is synonymous with the Bowen Island food scene. Nestled in a quaint, wooden building, this joint serves a mean breakfast spread, but make sure to come by before the morning rush.

We loved the eggs benny, salmon, and breakfast burrito—they’re all yummy, but not without pairing it with a cup of oat vanilla latte and day-old scones and croissants.

This unpretentious French cafe and bakery is where you can score tasty croissants and baked goods, with both sweet and savory options. Make sure to take some pics as the location of this cafe is just lovely—like a cute little village.

Right on the golf course on the southeast side of the island is The SHED, where Fridays are pizza only and the rest of the week is all about Mexican staples like quesadillas, enchiladas, and ceviche.

Order the seafood ceviche, the salmon, and the habanero chicken. For dessert, get the ginger ice cream sandwich, which we know sounds unusual, but trust us, it’s surprisingly delicious.

Once you get off the ferry, head to Branch on Bowen for tasty tacos that are wrapped in gluten-free tortilla. There’s not a lot of options but it makes it easier to decide on what to get.

Taco portions are quite generous – one taco can easily leave you feeling satisfied. The vegetarian sweet potato option was a unique and flavorful choice. And to top it off, you can enjoy Earnest Ice Cream’s delightful ice cream right here!

There’s plenty of stuff to do outdoors right here on Bowen Island, but we reckon there’s nothing quite like kayaking. The folks who show you the ropes are super informative and make sure you’re having a blast while you’re at it.

As you paddle around, you might just spot all sorts of sea creatures – sea lions, orcas, and seals, you name it. It’s a fantastic way to discover the island and take in those stunning BC vistas from the water.
