We decided right there and then that this park was our new favorite hangout. Plus, where else can you find a duck pond that’s more social than your Friday night plans?!

Best Time to Go
The best time to go to John Hendry Park is from spring to early fall. That’s when you get those beautiful Cherry blossoms poppin’. But honestly, any time of the year, it’s a solid spot to chill in the park.
What is John Hendry Park?
John Hendry Park, also known as Trout Lake Park, is a cherished green space offering recreational amenities and natural beauty.
The park is important for community well-being and outdoor activities, it provides locals and tourists with a serene retreat for picnics, sports, and leisurely walks, fostering a sense of connection with nature.
Back in the late 1800s, John Hendry Park was actually one of Vancouver’s first places for logging. The lake there used to supply water for the Hastings Sawmill, owned by this big shot named John Hendry.
Then in 1926, Hendry’s daughter, who was married to some important guy named Eric Hamber, gave the mill property to the Park Board. But she had one condition: they had to name it after her dad.
Fast forward to 1963, they built the Grandview Community Centre nearby. Later on, in 1977, they spruced it up and changed the name to Trout Lake Community Centre.
And get this, in 2010, they built a brand-new ice rink and spruced up the place even more just in time for the Winter Olympics. Nowadays, it’s the heart of the Cedar Cottage neighborhood.
How big is John Hendry Park?
John Hendry Park is 27.3 hectares (67.5 acres) of land located in Vancouver, British Columbia. It’s home to Trout Lake, a popular spot for swimming and picnicking in the summer months.
The park also has these cool walking trails, a spot where your furry pals can roam off-leash, all kinds of sports facilities, and there’s even the Trout Lake Community Centre.
How to Get to John Hendry Park
By car: Go northeast on Hornby St towards W Georgia. Then, turn right onto W Georgia and stay left to keep on Georgia Viaduct. Keep going straight onto Prior St, then onto Venables St. Turn right onto Clark Dr, followed by a left onto E 12th Ave.
Next, turn right onto Victoria Dr, then left onto E 19th Ave. Finally, turn left onto BC Pkwy, and you’ll spot the park on your right.
By public transit: ride the Skytrain Waterfront Station to Nanaimo Station. From there, John Hendry Park is only an 11-minute walk away.

If you’re into Sichuan cuisine, ChongQing On Commercial is the spot to hit up. Their dishes pack a bit of heat, especially the spicy ones, but fear not—they’ve got plenty of other options to satisfy your taste buds.
The decor is pretty straightforward, with a touch of vintage flair thanks to those ’70s chandeliers.
We recently tried their Mongolian beef, ginger beef, orange peel chicken, and chow mein, and the portions were huge! Everything came out piping hot and tasted super fresh.

If you’re strolling down Commercial Drive in East Vancouver, you can’t miss The Burrow, previously known as ‘Bandidas Taqueria’. This spot dishes out Mexican-inspired cuisine, including all-day breakfast and a selection of local beers.

John Hendry Park boasts an indoor rink, offering a cool option from September to the end of March. It’s got a fantastic sheet of ice and top-notch facilities, making it a prime spot for hockey enthusiasts.
