Kerrisdale is a charming neighborhood in Vancouver, known for its affluent residential areas and boutique shops. Its importance lies in its historical significance, featuring heritage buildings and a unique atmosphere.
In 1905, Kerrisdale was named when R.H. Sterling, manager of BC Electric Railway, asked Mrs. MacKinnon to name the interurban stop on West 41st. She opted for “Kerry’s Dale,” paying homage to her family home, Kerrydale, in Gairloch, Scotland.
By 1908, Kerrisdale became part of the new Point Grey municipality, and the first election went down on January 11, 1908. But, it wasn’t until 1929 when it became part of the City of Vancouver, merging with Point Grey.
Even today, Kerrisdale holds on to the original development layout from those early years, shaped by the Wilson Road and Vancouver-Lulu Island train tracks.
The OG settlers of Kerrisdale crafted a diverse array of homes in various styles, many of which still stand today. Architectural influences range from English Arts and Crafts to Spanish Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, and the Beaux Art style.
Kerrisdale has managed to preserve a significant number of its original homes, solidifying its status as one of Vancouver’s best neighborhoods to visit.
