There’s just something about hitting the open road that brings out our inner adventurer—especially when we’ve got a long stretch ahead, like our Vancouver to Winnipeg road trip.
I don’t know if it was the thrill of the unknown or the endless supply of gas station snacks, but this drive had us buzzing with excitement (and maybe a little uncertainty about how many times we’d be asking “Are we there yet?”).
After trying out different routes, we’ve whittled it down to three epic journeys, each more stunning than the last. Now, let’s hit the road!
Best Time to Go
The best time to visit Winnipeg is from June to September as this is when the weather is fair, giving visitors the chance to engage in the many recreational activities the city has to offer.
This includes hiking, walking, and exploring the neighborhoods. However, if you’re going for the snowy weather, December to March is the best time to visit for skiing, ice skating, snowboarding, and snowshoeing.
How long does it take to drive from Vancouver to Winnipeg?
The drive from Vancouver to Winnipeg typically takes about 26 to 28 hours, covering a distance of approximately 2,294 kilometers.
Route 1: Northern Route
Distance: 2,530 kilometers (1572 miles)
Estimated Driving Time: 27 hours
- Start by getting on the Trans-Canada Highway (BC-1 E) from W Georgia Street, Terminal Avenue, and E 1st Avenue.
- Follow the Trans-Canada Highway (BC-1 E), BC-5 N, and the Trans-Canada Highway all the way to Portage Avenue in Winnipeg.
- Once you’re there, just keep going straight on Portage Avenue.

If you’re afraid of heights, this may give you a thrilling rush, but the panoramic views are worth it. The knowledgeable staff enrich the experience with fascinating facts and stories.
Take the Jasper Sky Tram

The Jasper SkyTram offers a quick 7-minute ride to the top, where you’ll be greeted by breathtaking panoramic views of the mountain range and the town of Jasper below. Being surrounded by the majestic Canadian Rockies on all sides is an awe-inspiring experience.

Conveniently located just off Highway 5, it’s an ideal spot to stretch your legs and enjoy nature. In winter, the trails transform into peaceful cross-country skiing routes.

Route 2: Central Route
Distance: 2,460 kilometers (1,528 miles)

- Start by getting on the Trans-Canada Highway (BC-1 E) from W Georgia Street, Terminal Avenue, and E 1st Avenue.
- Stay on the Trans-Canada Highway (BC-1 E) and take BC-5 North toward Jasper.
- From there, follow AB-16, the Yellowhead Highway, and SK-16 East, continuing along the Yellowhead Highway.
- Then, take the Trans-Canada Highway (MB-1 E) all the way to Portage Avenue in Winnipeg.
- Once you arrive, keep driving straight onto Portage Avenue.

If you’re passing through Moose Jaw, the Tunnels of Moose Jaw is a must-visit attraction, and we highly recommend doing all three tours: The Chicago Connection, Bunker 24, and Passage to Fortune.
The tours are an immersive experience with impressive attention to detail, blending fun, theatrics, and animatronics for an engaging adventure. Led by talented actors, each tour feels like a live performance.
Though inspired by historical events, parts of the tours are fictionalized. Embrace it as interactive theater, and you’ll enjoy the experience even more. This stop is well worth your time on the road.
Stop in Canmore

Canmore is a charming alpine town and the perfect gateway to the stunning attractions of the Rocky Mountains. A highlight is the gondola ride to Sulphur Mountain’s summit, where you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of six mountain ranges and the picturesque town of Banff.
From here, you can also explore Canada’s oldest national park, Banff National Park, by taking a scenic cruise on Lake Minnewanka, surrounded by incredible landscapes.

This national park is an absolute must-see, offering some of the most breathtaking scenery you’ll encounter on your drive from Vancouver to Winnipeg.
Emerald Lake is stunningly beautiful and easy to access, with views that are simply beyond description. The park also features Takakkaw Falls and the incredible Natural Bridge, making it a top-notch destination.
The dog-friendly trails are a bonus for those traveling with pets. Just a heads up—parking at Emerald Lake can be limited, so it’s best to arrive early or later in the day to avoid the midday rush.
Enjoy the View of the City at Mount Revelstoke National Park

If you’re driving from Vancouver to Winnipeg, this park is a fantastic stop that’s well worth the detour. The journey to the top of the mountain rewards you with breathtaking views and stunning mountain flora and fauna.
Along the way, you’ll find numerous hiking options that aren’t overcrowded with tourists, making it a peaceful retreat. Even in the middle of the day, parking at the summit was available. For those who prefer not to hike, a free shuttle takes you to the top.
Route 3: Southern Route
Distance: 2,700 kilometers (1,677 miles)
Estimated Driving Time: 28 hours
- This route crosses through the United States of America. Start by heading northeast on Hornby Street toward W Georgia Street.
- Then take I-5 South, I-90 East, US-95 North, BC-95 North, and follow the Trans-Canada Highway all the way to Portage Avenue in Winnipeg.
- Once you arrive, keep going straight onto Portage Avenue.

Shelby, once a cattle town, is home to some of the bestest and tastiest restaurants. There’s the Dash In, famous for backyard BBQ, Griddle for chicken fried steak and eggs, and Montana Club with their truly awesome ribeye.
It’s worth stopping by here for a meal or two before you continue your journey eastward towards Winnipeg.
See the Beautiful Sights at Riverside State Park

You can’t go wrong with a stop at Riverside. It’s an expansive area offering endless exploration opportunities, whether you stick close to town or venture into its more remote corners.
The park provides a range of activities, including fishing, swimming, hiking, and birding, all set in stunning surroundings.
Make sure to bring your Washington State Park Discover Pass—it’s just $33 for a yearly pass, which gives you access to this park and all other state parks. If you’re only stopping for the day, you can purchase a one-day pass for $10 at the park.
Visit the Beautiful Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest

The gorgeous forest here makes it a must-visit stop on your drive from Vancouver to Winnipeg. You’ll find amazing hikes with stunning views, but if hiking isn’t an option, the scenic drive through the area offers plenty of beautiful turnouts to enjoy.
Traveling via Hwy 20, you’ll experience a mini version of the Swiss Alps with breathtaking terrain and abundant wildlife. The tranquility of the area is perfect for a peaceful walk in the woods, making it one of our favorite spots along this route.
Plus, on hot sunny days, there are plenty of cool, shaded areas to enjoy nature’s own air conditioning.
Stop by Seattle

Take a Detour to North Cascades National Park

This national park is a true gem and definitely deserves a spot on your bucket list! Its lesser-known status means you’ll enjoy fewer crowds, making your visit even more enjoyable.
You’ll find everything you could wish for here—turquoise blue lakes and rivers, snow-capped mountains, stunning waterfalls, and fantastic hikes.
To explore the highlights, simply drive through the Ross Lake Recreation Area, which offers easy access to the park’s most breathtaking sights.
