2. Y5 Creative
|SERVICES||● Print Collateral|
● Packaging Design
● Media Assets
● Branding & Design
|ADDRESS||3552 W 41st Ave #31, Vancouver, BC V6N 3E6, Canada|
|OPERATING HOURS||Monday-Friday: 9am–5:30pm|
Y5 Creative is a multi-awarded company. They were one of the top B2B companies in Canada according to Clutch and they got Bark’s Certificate of Excellence in 2020.
They have worked with companies in many different industries, some of them being Forte Training, WBI Home Warranty, and Hupfau Dental. Their projects in a wide range of industries show that they’re capable of adapting to many different requirements.
Aside from that, Y5 Creative also has a wide range of services. They can do branding and rebranding, along with trademark application help and web development.
However, although they have some experience with mid-sized businesses, the majority of their work comes from smaller businesses. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, mind you, but it may be an issue if your business is a bigger one.
They also don’t have on-site services. This might be a bit annoying for those who prefer communicating in real life to communicating online.
In spite of that, we still believe they’re among the best graphic designers in Vancouver. Given the strength of their customers’ testimonials, their many awards, and their experience, it’s easy to see why they make this list despite a few minor qualms.
Based on these reviews, these clients enjoyed Y5 Creative’s work:
“We enjoyed working with the Y5 Team while they patiently worked with us
setting up our website. The Y5 Team made the website user friendly and as we add new components to the website they help us to implement them. They are easy to communicate with, friendly, patient and aiming to excellence.” – Razi Mizrahi
“Working with Carol and the Y5 team has been one of the best decisions for my business and my brand. They go far beyond just business. They make you feel as part of their team. Their creative passion is contagious and I found myself being more creative while working with them. If there are problems, they find solutions. In so many ways, they set the bar for their line of business and I would recommend them to anyone because they go above and beyond every single time we work on something together.” – Karina LeBlanc
3. Workshop Creative Inc.
|SERVICES||● Custom Branding (Logo design and identity design)|
● Brochures & Flat Sheets
|ADDRESS||1155 W Pender St #700, Vancouver, BC V6E 2P4, Canada|
|OPERATING HOURS||Monday-Friday: 9am–5pm|
Previously known as Blank Canvas Design, this Vancouver company has been in the industry since 2013. Their services range from graphic design to social media management, as they’re pretty much an all-in-one graphic design agency.
The first thing that drew our attention to this company is that it has attracted many well-known clients.
One of their clients, Thuja Wellness, worked with Workshop Creative to create their brand strategy, identity, and packaging, as an example. They also worked with this company to create social media content.
They have also designed a logo for the CBC Vancouver Science Fair. Reflecting the goal and identity of the science fair, Workshop Creative made a logotype that illustrates wires and circuits in the shape of ‘Vancouver Science Fair.’
In any case, although this company is pretty well-known, they still lack manpower to accept more projects every month.
We like that the company admitted that, though. With fewer projects hogging attention, they can focus more on their current projects to ensure that they will have higher-quality output.
Another thing that we find attractive about this company is their transparency about the prices of their services. You won’t need to contact them just to budget appropriately as they are public about the potential cost of getting them as your graphic design team.
Just don’t expect that you can get all their services through just one package. It would be nice if Workshop Creative offered one discounted service package just to help new businesses build their branding and their presence on digital channels simultaneously… but they don’t, or not yet.
Still, we find that the cons here are easy to overlook due to the experience and quality that this brand provides.
Here are some reviews from their previous clients:
“Gisele and her team at Workshop Creative are masters at their craft. Gisele worked closely with me on rebranding my agency picnicsocial.ca and I got to see why so many people highly recommend her. She listens and ask questions in order to create a concept that elevates your initial ideas. Within a month she provided me with three designs to choose from for my new brand. Ultimately, we decided on a colourful and inviting motif that convey the picnic mission, values and team members. I’m so happy with final look of picnic social and I have Gisele to thank for that.” – Erica Elizabeth
“Gisele and her team have consistently delivered print marketing projects for me and my business over the last 2 years. Besides being prompt, professional and creative, she asks great questions to help create design solutions that help us achieve our goals. I recommend them without hesitation to any growth minded business.” – Saul Brown
4. Laura Ramsay Design
|SERVICES||● Digital (Social channel artworks, pitch decks, lookbooks, etc)|
|ADDRESS||289 Drake St, Vancouver, BC V6B 4Y8, Canada|
|OPERATING HOURS||Monday-Friday: 9am-5pm|
Laura Ramsay Design or LRD specializes in creating graphic designs for digital, print, and branding. We think that’s a pretty good range of services as they even have packaging design, which is pretty rare for many creative agencies at the moment.
They also have nice packages that employ a multi-disciplinary approach to not only make your brand visually interesting but to also kickstart the company’s exposure through digital marketing.
Albeit, these services can take a lot of time as even the shortest timeline for LRD takes 4 weeks. Their more inclusive service packages also take more than 3 months.
We somehow understand why the long timeline is needed though. LRD wants to focus on improving a client’s complete brand identity and doesn’t want to just give a single logo design to clients.
In a rush to start your brand? Sadly, you might need to book 2-3 months in advance just to get LRD’s service.
While we’ve heard from our respondents that there are times that LRD can do rush jobs, you might need to be lucky just to get that opening for rush jobs.
LRD is also an expert on minimalist designs. But it’s gonna be a costly problem if minimalism is not what you’re looking for.
It’s also worth noting that they have a rule about a limited number of revisions. This means that if the final illustration looks different from what you want, it might cost you a lot more money to have it fixed once you go past the revision number.
Exceeding the agreed rounds of revisions means you will need to pay LRD per hour aside from the originally agreed payment. In some cases, that can be pretty expensive.
Despite those cons, LRD is still a solid choice for a graphic design company. The past clients we’ve talked to also indicated that they’re capable enough that the limited number of “free” revisions shouldn’t be a big issue.
These reviews show that Laura Ramsay Design has loyal clients due to their outstanding work:
“We have worked with Laura for over five years for all of our branding, marketing, and website design work. She produces outstanding quality work for us and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her services to any business looking to take their brand to the next level.” – Jeff Lorentz
“Been working with Laura every week for over a year. I can say without a doubt she’s a pleasure to work with, extremely responsive and consistently makes our deadlines! Would definitely recommend her services to anyone looking for design assistance.” – Becky Brauer
5. Straydog Branding
● Packaging Design
● Graphic Design
|ADDRESS||910 3rd St, West Vancouver, BC V7T 2J3, Canada|
|OPERATING HOURS||Monday-Friday: 9am-5pm|
This company offers branding, website design, digital marketing, and graphic design, amongst many others. They can also do a few one-off projects such as business card designs and banners and posters for trade shows.
It’s worth noting that they have also won a few awards and even became a regional finalist for DesignEdge. Their awards along with their skills have made them very attractive to many companies in and outside Vancouver.
Some of the big names this company has worked with are North Vancouver Mitsubishi and West Vancouver Schools.
They created the graphic designs, vehicle wrap, and print production for North Vancouver Mitsubishi during their Primal Quest 2018 event. The vehicle wrap design on the Outlander PHEV was intended to help reach the target market of this brand and got them important exposure.
As for West Vancouver Schools, Straydog Branding rebranded them from School District 45 to West Vancouver Schools. They also created a new logo along with print and digital materials that the district can use.
This rebranding allowed the school district to communicate their vision more to audiences around the world. In both cases, the clients were reportedly happy.
Although we find this company a good one overall, there are some issues that we have a hard time ignoring.
The first is that they’re not transparent about the price of their service. We know that this is still common, but with others on our list now providing a base price for their services, the oversight is getting harder to excuse as time goes on.
Second, they don’t offer any inclusive (discounted) packages, which is disappointing… especially since there’s a need to support amazing visual branding with great marketing too.
These reviewers talk about the results of the services done by Straydog Branding:
“The team at Straydog managed a branding and subsequent website project for one of our clients. Rob’s creative ability and project management skills are top shelf. We really appreciate the approach and the result!” – Brennen McLean
“Straydog Branding has actually created 2 awesome logos and built 3 websites for me over the last several years. Their creative, copy & project management teams were all top notch…and delivered on time! Highly recommend them!” – Jennifer J
6. OK Dave
|SERVICES||● Brand Audit / Strategy|
● Visual Identity
● Print & Editorial
● Social Media
|OPERATING HOURS||Monday-Friday: 9am-5pm|
OK Dave is a Vancouver-based graphic design firm that offers brand audits, visual identity creation, packaging, lettering, infographics, and many more. This company is full of skilful graphic designers in Vancouver who know how to play with colours to make your brand pop.
They have worked with different clients from different industries. Some of the notable ones are Innisfree, which is a South Korean skincare and Make-up brand, and Virtuous Pie, a vegan restaurant serving handcrafted pizza and ice cream.
This company has also worked with many mid-sized businesses. With 50% of their clients being from midmarket companies, 30% from smaller businesses and only 20% for bigger businesses.
We’re not surprised by the small numbers for bigger businesses though. This company only has a few employees and it might take longer for them to finish some bigger projects.
According to reviews from clients too, their branding and designs were often well-received by the public and investors. And for ilikestorytelling, one of their clients, OK Dave’s work even increased the email click-through rate.
However, an issue we have with them is that they don’t have service packages available.
We think that many newer businesses can benefit from these types of pre-selected service. With pre-selected packages, they won’t need to go through the lengthy process of choosing the services that fit what they want their brand to achieve.
But if you’re not in a rush, OK Dave is a great choice due to their amazing portfolio that will make your company stand out.
These reviews show the results of their visual branding strategy:
“The creative produced by OK Dave completely exceeded all project stakeholder requirements, receiving high levels of engagement and praise online and delivering an 11% click-through rate as well as a number of qualified leads. Their team is incredibly collaborative, hard-working, and personable.” – Annabelle King
“The team at OK DAVE was integral to the establishment of Minimalism Wines. Their work gained positive feedback because of its originality and sophistication. Customers can expect an accommodating team that thrives working with young businesses.” – Rawan Kabra
