Urban Yarns, a brick-and-mortar yarn store, may be known for its large selection and range of yarns, needles, notions, patterns, and books, but there’s more to them than what meets the eye.

From what we’ve seen, the store’s got a wide variety of classes each month. We were glad to see the classes for beginners, experienced, and advanced knitters.

Although we were a bit disappointed to see that materials such as yarn, needles, and other supplies are not included in the class fee.

Nevertheless, we were thrilled to see that they give students the freedom to choose their own projects. We believe this gives students more opportunities to explore their creativity.

It’s also superb, especially for beginners, that staff at Urban Yarns are happy to help you choose a pattern or yarn/needles that best suits your skill level and preferences.

Apart from that, they also have helpful knitting and crochet books showcasing different colorwork and stitch patterns for those looking to expand their skills.

Overall, Urban Yarns is definitely one of the best places to go for knitting and crochet classes in Vancouver. You have complete freedom over your project while also having that little guidance and support.

Tucked in the East Vancouver neighborhood, Baaad Anna’s Yarn Store is another local yarn store to look out for. Aside from the fact that it’s got some killer yarns, they also stock eco-friendly ones!

These yarns, which you can use when you join in their classes, are made of organic wool and cotton. They’re also Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified, which means they’re legit organic.

Now, apart from the usual knitting and crochet classes, what we liked here is they specific classes they have for certain items such as hats, socks, and even sweaters.

In addition, they also have classes for different knitting and crochet styles such as classic ribbed style toque, lace knitting, and many more.

We believe this allows for a more focused learning experience and helps students master specific techniques. It’s also nice that they have self-paced classes where students are free to choose the project they want.

We also appreciate that they hold small classes, with a maximum of only six participants, ensuring individualized attention and guidance from the instructor.

All in all, we’re pretty confident in recommending Baaad Anna’s Yarn Store. You get to knit and/or crochet literally whatever you want using organic materials.

Pros

  • Has eco-friendly and GOTS-certified yarns
  • Item-specific classes
  • Holds small classes

Cons

  • Limited class availability

Clara Leung, owner of the C Yarn Hut, is all about knitting and crocheting. We’re serious; she’s very passionate about knitting and crocheting, and we quite liked her personalized approach.

You see, knitting and crocheting classes here at the C Yarn Hut are one-on-one, and they’re all led by Clara. We see this as this shop’s strength, as it allows for individualized attention.

This shop has one class called the “Amigurumi” workshop, which is basically the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting.

So you can expect to learn not only the basic stitches but also how to read the pattern in English format and the Japan chart.

Students get to choose between 4 or 8 lessons for beginner workshops, and we’re happy to know that these classes include all the materials you’ll need for your project.

The C Yarn Hut also has classes for the young ones (ages 11 to 15) and for ages 16 and up. The shop also offers advanced classes for those looking to expand their skills in amigurumi crafting.

That said, C Yarn Hut is most definitely a fine choice for those looking to learn to knit and/or crochet. Their workshop is quite comprehensive and provides individualized attention to each student.

Founded by Felicia Lo in 2004, SweetGeorgia Yarns is all about yarns, knitting, and basically creating things out of fiber. This yarn shop started as a small business and has grown to a full-production dye studio and fiber arts school in 2017.

Now, what you need to know here is that this school is all about accessible learning. The “School of Sweet Georgia” offers online classes for knitting, crocheting, spinning, weaving, dyeing, and many more.

We loved how they design their own artisan yarn and fibers. These materials are individually hand-dyed in small batches, which we think adds a unique and personal touch to each project.

While we’re a bit bummed that they only have online classes, you wouldn’t believe how jam-packed their curriculum is. We’re talking 900 video lessons, workshops, tutorials, and articles on all things knitting and crocheting.

Enrolling in the “School of Sweet Georgia” also comes with monthly livestream sessions with Felicia, study sessions, and online team buildings. It’s quite a comprehensive and interactive way to learn.

We don’t hesitate when we say that SweetGeorgia Yarns offers one of the best knitting and crocheting classes in Vancouver. The shop offers a comprehensive and accessible learning experience for anyone looking to improve their skills in fiber arts.

Pros

  • Hand-made artisan material
  • In-depth education

Cons

  • No on-site classes

As Metro Vancouver’s oldest and largest yarn shop, Knit & Stitch’s founder and owner, Edith Mutsaerts, did everything in her power to take the materials and styles for handknitting from Austria to Vancouver in 1971.

The shop has a pretty impressive knitting program that’s comprehensive and personal, as it’s a one-on-one kind of experience, allowing students to receive individualized attention and guidance on their projects.

To us, it feels very welcoming that you’ll learn alongside a community of knitters that have been with the shop for years. Sure, the price tag for a membership is a little steep, but here’s what we’ve seen that makes us think it’s worth it.

Not only does Knit & Stitch provide one-on-one classes, but they also have these other knitting programs that are specific to an item. This includes sweaters, socks, hand warmers, and even teddy bears.

We were also fascinated to see the wide variety of yarns they have in stock. It’s as if they have every kind of yarn from around the globe, because that’s exactly the case. Yarns from Italy, Chile, Argentina, the USA, and the UK.

In conclusion, you’ll find that Knit & Stitch Shoppe offers a unique and diverse knitting experience that caters to all skill levels and interests.

Pros

  • Metro Vancouver’s oldest and largest yarn shop
  • Wide variety of yarns

Cons

  • Relatively pricey membership program

Homey community

“Homey community place to sit & knit, or get assistance with your knitting;..”

-Ms. Low, Google Reviews

Helpful and knowledgeable staff

“The people were very helpful and knowledgable. Found lots of great yarn at very fair prices. We were definitely satisfied with the hospitality and selections…”
