What were the Othello Tunnels used for?
The Othello Tunnels in Hope, BC, is a historic railway route that traverses through stunning granite cliffs and over the rushing waters of the Coquihalla River. It now forms an integral part of the Trans Canada Trail system.
The tunnels were named after characters in Shakespeare’s plays due to Andrew McCulloch, one of the engineers who was a great fan of the famed English author.
Carved through natural granite, the tunnels feature sturdy concrete and wood interior supports, connected by trestles in multiple sections. In 1986, the area was designated as a provincial recreation area!
This engineering marvel now serves as a popular hiking destination, offering scenic views and a glimpse into Canada’s railway history, attracting tourists and locals alike.
Why are the Othello Tunnels closed?
The Othello Tunnels have been closed since November 2021 due to extensive damage that compromised both the bridges and tunnels.
However, the Othello Tunnels will reopen in two phases. The first phase is set for a partial reopening of the park in July 2024, with the entire trail expected to fully reopen by the summer of 2025.
