The best time to go to Salt Spring Island is from May to September, as these months offer the best weather with warmer and drier conditions. Additionally, the popular Saturday Market takes place during this period!
How do I get to Salt Spring Island from Vancouver?
There are a bunch of ways to get to Salt Spring Island from Vancouver, including driving, taking a ferry, a private boat, or by seaplane. Here’s a complete guide on determining the best technique for your trip.
By Car and Ferry
- Drive to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal by taking BC-99 South. Follow signs for Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal, which is around an hour from the city center.
- BC Ferries connect the Southern Gulf Islands (which includes Salt Spring Island) with Vancouver. The most direct route is from Tsawwassen to Long Harbour on Salt Spring Island.
It’s wise to check BC Ferries’ sailing schedules for sailing times and to book your reservation in advance. The ferry ride from Tsawwassen to Long Harbour takes about an hour and a half.
By Seaplane
Multiple seaplane companies operate flights from Vancouver to Salt Spring Island. Departure points in Vancouver include the downtown Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre and the South Terminal at Vancouver International Airport (YVR).
Salt Spring Island doesn’t have airports, but they do allow seaplanes to land into the Ganges Harbour. You have three options to fly to Salt Spring Island via seaplane:
- Harbour Air: flies to Salt Spring Island from Vancouver and YVR.
- Kenmore Air: flies to Salt Spring Island from Washington and other south coastal areas of British Columbia.
- Seair Seaplanes: flies to Salt Spring Island from YVR.
Seaplanes land at Ganges Harbor on Salt Spring Island. While these seaplane companies operate year-round, flight frequency may decrease during winter months due to lower demand and potential weather disruptions.
It’s also important to note that flight time can fluctuate based on the season, day of the week, and demand. It’s a good idea to check with the aforementioned seaplane companies directly.
By Private Boat
If you own a boat, you can set sail from various marinas in Vancouver, such as Coal Harbour or Granville Island Marina. From there, head south through the Strait of Georgia.
The journey typically takes around two to three hours, depending on your speed and the weather conditions. At Salt Spring Island, there are public marinas at Ganges and Fulford:
- Ganges Marina is open to both transient and resident boats of all sizes. For transient boats, the price starts at $1.45 per night, while those who are planning to pay for long term moorage cost around $16 to $22 per foot.
- Saltspring Marina is open to transient boaters, yacht clubs, and local year-round moorage. Transient rates start at $1.60 per foot, and long term moorage is around $17.50 to $28 per foot.
