The best time to go to Watersprite Lake is from June to September when the weather is warm and dry, offering optimal hiking conditions. However, visiting during the off-season or on weekdays can also be a good option to avoid crowds.

The trailhead towards Watersprite Lake starts on a gravel road where you’ll come across the Watersprite Lake trailhead sign. This path is uphill, and as you ascent, you’ll reach a much wider gravel road with great views of Skookum Dam.
From there, the trail veers right, offering stunning mountain vistas just minutes into the hike. Then, follow the trail east where you’ll cross Skullhead Creek via a wooden bridge.
As you continue, expect several creek crossings and technical sections before reaching a junction marked for Watersprite.
Follow the trail through an open exposure, gradually climbing as you pass scenic viewpoints and rocky terrain. Keep an eye out for flagging and markers, especially as the trail becomes more challenging with rooty and muddy sections.
Eventually, you’ll arrive at the Prow Lookout, offering panoramic views of the Skookum Creek Valley and surrounding peaks. After navigating rocky and technical terrain, including a boulder field and creek crossings, you’ll reach Watersprite Lake.
Parking
There’s ample parking available at the Watersprite Lake trailhead, with space for over 75 cars. To make the most of your hike and avoid both the heat and crowds, it’s advisable to hit the trail by 9:30 am.
Is Watersprite Lake hike hard?
Watersprite Lake offers a challenging yet rewarding hiking experience amidst stunning alpine scenery. Its pristine turquoise waters, surrounded by towering peaks, captivate outdoor enthusiasts and provide a serene escape from city life.

The hike to Watersprite Lake presents a moderate challenge, spanning 8.5km with a 700m elevation gain, typically requiring about 3 hours to complete. Though not overly strenuous, it offers a satisfying adventure for hikers seeking a scenic journey through Vancouver’s wilderness.
Can you swim at Watersprite Lake?
Yes, you can swim at Watersprite Lake. However, be prepared for frigid temperatures. It’s not ideal for leisurely swims, but on warmer days or for the adventurous, a short dip or a swim to the lake’s island can be invigorating.
How to Get to Watersprite Lake
To reach the Watersprite Lake trailhead, take Mamquam River Forest Service Road from Highway 99, just before Squamish, and drive for approximately 13km.
Cross two bridges over the Mamquam River, then watch for a left turn with prominent signs indicating the Skookum Dam service road. This road is rugged, so drive cautiously.
At one point, you’ll encounter two road options; both are challenging, but we found the higher road slightly easier. Eventually, you’ll arrive at the trailhead marked by an outhouse and a gate.

Camp at Watersprite Lake

Watersprite Lake is a crystal-clear, turquoise gem surrounded by dramatic peaks, making it one of the most awe-inspiring hikes and alpine campgrounds in the area.
The Watersprite Lake Provincial Recreation Site offers 10 alpine tent platforms and 10 tent sites, managed by the British Columbia Mountaineering Club in partnership with Rec Sites and Trails.
Watersprite Lake campground used to operate on a first-come, first-served basis. However, as of 2022, reservations are required for the summer months, even for tent sites. Tent sites are $20 per night.
Take a Dip

If you can tolerate the cold, take a swim in this glacier-fed lake! The breathtaking Watersprite Lake looks just like the stunning pictures you see online.
With its crisp, clear water, it’s perfect for cooling off after a hike that’s in full sun for about 80% of the time.
Hike the Trail

The overall trail is relatively flat with limited views but opens up to beautiful meadows. Despite the modest elevation gain, the roots and boulders make this an intermediate hike. Along the way, you’ll find plenty to admire, including numerous wildflowers if you hike during their bloom.

Relax, read a book, sunbathe, or simply admire the views from one of the large boulders around Watersprite Lake. Peaceful doesn’t even begin to describe it—if there’s a place to unwind for a day, this is it.

When heading out for a hike to Watersprite Lake, Japanese food can be a wonderful choice. You’ll notice that many locals opt for takeout from this place, which is usually a good indicator of quality.
The sashimi dinner box offers excellent value for money and delicious food. Everything we sampled met our expectations, and it’s clear why this spot is favored by locals.

Pepe’s Chophouse is known for serving top-notch pastas, steaks, and tapas, along with an enticing selection of wines and cocktails. The atmosphere is casually elegant and welcoming.
Their baby back ribs are delicious, served with mashed potatoes and vegetables, ensuring a satisfying meal without feeling overly indulgent. The drinks, particularly the Chico martini, were also impressive and added to our overall enjoyment.

The Locavore Bar & Grill has a unique setting with a greenhouse-like interior and plenty of outdoor seating. They offer a menu featuring sandwiches, starters, mains, craft cocktails, and beer.
When you place your order inside, including drinks, they give you a beeper to alert you when your food is ready at the nearby food truck.
We recently tried their Salmon burger and mango guava ale on tap, and both were delicious. The patio had a relaxed and cozy atmosphere, with fantastic views of Mount Garibaldi.
