Where are the best places to windsurf and kiteboard in Vancouver?
Jericho Beach
Location: West of the Kitsilano neighborhood in Vancouver
The winds dancing off the North Shore mountains to Jericho Beach create the perfect playground for windsurfers and kiteboarders.
It’s surely a laid-back spot with enough space for everyone, whether you’re mastering new tricks or simply soaking in the seaside vibes.
This spot is perfect for beginners. The less intense conditions here make it easier to learn and practice new skills without feeling overwhelmed.
Best Time to Go
In spring, the weather is mild (10°C to 18°C) with gentle winds, making Jericho Beach great for beginners and intermediate riders. Plus, fewer crowds mean more room to play.
Summer brings warm weather (18°C to 25°C) with occasional rains and steady winds (15 to 25 knots), particularly mid-day to late afternoon. Summer months are the most popular time for water sports and recreation, so expect a pretty lively vibe on the beach.
Fall cools down to 10°C to 20°C with stronger winds, ideal for experienced windsurfers and kiteboarders. The beach is moderately crowded, which offers a good mix of interaction and space.
Winter is cold and rainy (3°C to 10°C) with variable winds, meant to challenge advanced riders. It’s the least crowded season, so you’ll get almost exclusive access to the waters.
How to Get to Jericho Beach
From downtown Vancouver, simply head west on West 4th Avenue until you reach Jericho Beach Park. Parking is available nearby, and you can access the beach directly from the parking lots.
English Bay
Location: Along the southern shore of the Burrard Inlet
English Bay is another prime spot for windsurfing and kiteboarding in Vancouver. There are also convenient amenities like equipment rentals and cafes nearby, so you can spend a day on the water worry-free.
Plus, you’ll enjoy the stunning views of the Vancouver skyline here!
Best Time to Go
English Bay is just 3 kilometers (about 2 miles) away from Jericho Beach. As expected, temperature ranges between the two are quite similar.
Spring brings small to medium wave heights, which are perfect for both beginners and those looking to improve their skills. The beach is also less crowded, so you’ll get plenty of room to move around and practice.
The warm weather and steady winds during summer usually bring calm to moderate wave heights. These conditions are perfect for all levels – plus, it’s the busiest season, so if you want to hear stories and practice with other riders, this is the best time to go.
Fall comes with stronger winds, medium wave heights, and thin crowds. There’s a good balance of space and activity during this time.
But of course, the beach is least crowded during winter, although you need extra caution against variable winds and larger waves. Compared to Jericho Beach, the English Bay is great for those who want quick access to city comforts post-session.
How to Get to English Bay
Located in Vancouver’s West End, English Bay is easy to access by car or public transit. Street parking is available nearby, and the beach is a short walk from surrounding streets.
Acadia Beach
Location: University Endowment Lands, west of the University of British Columbia campus
Acadia Beach is tucked within Stanley Park. Its sheltered cove and winds offer smooth rides, and this less crowded beach will give you ample space to practice.
You can also enjoy the stunning coastline views, trails, and picnic areas close by.
Best Time to Go
Temperatures and wave heights at Acadia Beach are similar to Jericho Beach and English Bay. But what stands out about Acadia Beach is its peaceful and scenic setting.
In spring, the beach is quieter, with blooming trails adding charm, perfect for solo practice and enjoying nature. Summer at Acadia Beach also brings warm weather and steady winds, but it’s more laid-back and less crowded than the first two beaches.
For the best wind conditions, visit in the fall when the winds are stronger and more consistent. Acadia Beach is particularly good during this time for advanced maneuvers.
Plus, Acadia’s stunning colors make it a unique spot in autumn!
How to Get to Acadia Beach
Enter Stanley Park from the West End or Coal Harbour and follow the road toward the seawall. Acadia Beach is accessible by foot or bike along the park’s scenic pathways.
Spanish Banks
Location: West of Jericho Beach, along the southern shore of the Burrard Inlet
Spanish Banks, with its sandy shores beneath the North Shore mountains, is another great spot to check out. You’ll get consistent wind and waves, which makes it ideal for water sports.
It also has a stunning natural backdrop, which creates a perfect setting for both practice and enjoyment.
Best Time to Go
Spanish Banks’ expansive sandy beach and wide tidal flats are amazing. In spring, the tidal flats are more exposed, and when this happens, you’ll have plenty of shallow water to practice in (which can be more forgiving if you fall).
No matter the level, windsurfers and kiteboarders will enjoy warm weather and steady winds during the summer months.
Despite being popular among water sports lovers during summer, the beach is large enough so it rarely feels overcrowded. The tidal changes throughout the day can give flat water to small waves.
For those trying advanced maneuvers, the cooler temperatures and stronger winds in fall are perfect. The beach is quieter, and the stunning autumn scenery adds to the experience.
How to Get to Spanish Banks
You’ll see the Spanish Banks west of Jericho Beach along Northwest Marine Drive. You can easily reach it by car or bicycle, and enjoy the scenic drive from downtown Vancouver or neighboring areas.
