One of our closest friends used to style her own hair. Braids, twists, and even dyeing her own hair—name it, she’s done it, until she found a hair salon that knew how to deal with braids and curls.
After one session, we honestly felt like she stepped out of a makeover show. And that’s how important it was to go after stylists who know the techniques and even the culture behind these styles, and that’s the magic of Black hair salons in Vancouver.
So if you’re looking for it too, then you’re in the right place. Continue reading as we give you a list of the best ones our friends have tried around the city.
How much do Black hair salon services cost in Vancouver?
In Vancouver, the cost of Black hair salon services typically ranges from $50 to $100. Meanwhile, you can expect to pay from $150 to $250 for hair styling such as cornrows, harper braids, pick and drop twisting, butterfly braids, fish bone, and harper braids
Ammerose Hair Salon is a full-service hair salon located in Downtown Vancouver with a strong focus on serving clients with diverse hair types and textures. Their approach emphasizes both everyday wearable styles and more glamorous looks designed to stand out.
A key strength of Ammerose is its specialization in multi-cultural hair care, including Black, Afro, African, and Caribbean hair types. The salon positions itself as experienced in handling textured hair with professional care and tailored styling techniques.
For Black hair salon services specifically, Ammerose offers a wide range of protective and styling options such as braiding, cornrows, dreadlocks, weaves, and hair extensions. These services are designed to support both style versatility and hair maintenance.
The salon also provides chemical and smoothing treatments that are often used in Black hair care, including relaxers, texturizers, and silk press services. These treatments are paired with modern techniques to help achieve sleek, manageable results while maintaining hair strength.
Ammerose emphasizes the use of high-quality products along with time-tested and modern methods to support healthy hair outcomes. Their stylists are described as highly skilled, with experience in executing complex styles such as up-dos and fusion extensions.
Another notable advantage is the salon’s team longevity, with some stylists having over 25 years of experience working there. This suggests a stable, experienced staff capable of handling both routine and advanced hair services.
Convenience is also highlighted through their Downtown Vancouver location near Howe and Davie Street, along with free parking behind the salon. They also offer free consultations to help new clients discuss their hair needs before booking services.
Pros
Strong specialization in multi-cultural and Black hair types
Offers chemical treatments like relaxers, texturizers, and silk press
Uses professional, high-quality products and modern techniques
Free consultations for new clients
Cons
Limited publicly provided information on pricing and service duration
The salon itself radiates positive energy and top-quality service
“I had such a wonderful experience at Ammerose Hair Salon! V was incredibly kind, patient, and genuinely helpful. I came in needing some guidance on how to add braid-in hair extensions since I’ve never done it before, and she took the time to walk me through the process without hesitation. Her support was so selfless and encouraging — it meant a lot!
The salon itself radiates positive energy and top-quality service. I highly recommend coming here for professional braids or any hair needs. Thank you again, V, for your warmth and expertise! 🙏💖”
“Shinju and Kanto took great care of me. Love the cornrows and fade I got from them. Definitely recommend this place for a great warm & welcoming place to get your braids done. The shop is very cozy and beautiful as well.”
Afro Hair Studio has been one of the most homey salons we’ve seen around Vancouver. Yes, you’ll be seated in a salon chair, but talking to the stylist would actually feel like you’re just catching up with a close friend on a couch.
After asking our friend about her preferred style, we observed how the stylist took her time to assess her current hair condition.
If you’re open to hearing suggestions, you’ll love that they share their opinions here, especially if they think their ideas would work best. For those who prefer a hairstyle with minimal maintenance, the team at Afro Hair Studio is also known for it.
We also observed how honest they were in giving advice. They are really vocal if they feel like a certain style wouldn’t work on a specific hair type. This indicates that they prioritize the client’s welfare over the sale.
Here, you can also find haircare products specifically designed for textured hair, which is quite convenient.
What we liked most about them is that they can work on a style quickly than what was promised. However, we just heard about some last-minute appointment cancellations. It can be really frustrating if you’ve already adjusted your other commitments.
Pros
Can craft personalized styles
Faster styling than expected
Careful assessment of hair before styling
Offers low-maintenance hairstyle options
Cons
Reports of occasional last-minute appointment cancellations
Makes clients feel at home
“I always come here and genuinely love this place. The team is super friendly and makes you feel right at home every time. It’s such a comfortable, welcoming setting, and they consistently do a great job. Can’t recommend them enough!”
“Was nervous about having my self-maintained locs serviced for the first time. Could not be happier with the outcome and experience!! Mary was so kind and fun, she worked fast and we shared laughs and thoughts on a lot of topics. Her colleague Satomi (sorry if misspelled) came in to help with the process as well, and was also really pleasant. The girls there are very talented and know what they’re doing. They worked so quick while making the experience really warm and fun. It was also extremely affordable for how much work they put into my hair. Can’t recommend this place enough! Thank you guys so much for cleaning my hair up!! 💘💘”

Elsa Hair Salon isn’t your typical salon where the storefront is filled with posters of artists sporting different hairstyles. To be honest, we almost missed it when we were walking along Commercial Drive—that’s how simple this salon is.
But don’t judge its facade; this salon is the one you should go to if you love a salon that pays high attention to detail. We observed how their stylists would section your hair neatly, ensuring they didn’t miss a spot.
Even better, they allot more time to double-check to ensure you’re happy with your new hairstyle—even months after your visit.
We also appreciate that while they’re closed on holidays, they can make necessary arrangements for you, especially if you’re attending a special event on that day. Just make sure to book it in advance.
Elsa Hair Salon also offers hair straightening services. So, if you’re looking for an alternative to the usual Black hairstyles or haircuts, then you have just found the right salon for you.
We also appreciate that this salon isn’t as busy as its counterparts. You can really enjoy some peace and quiet if you choose to pamper yourself here.
Additionally, the music inside the salon isn’t too loud, so for once we didn’t have to plug in our earphones.
Pros
High attention to detail
Calm and more quiet atmosphere
Flexible arrangements for special events
Offers hair straightening services
Cons
Closed on holidays
Accessible location
“Elsa is an amazing women! A small business owner, a mother, a wife and a valuable member of her community. When I first moved to Van in 2012 from Toronto, I could not find a Black hair stylist downtown. I finally tried a few places but in the end I chose Elsa’s Salon. She has a great location and she does such a great job with my hair. I’m so proud to only let her cut and style my hair. Check her out.”
“I highly recommend Elsa. Someone who had to do my hair disappointed me last minute and called Elsa to see if she would do my hair. It was already late but she patiently waited for me and styled my hair. She was very friendly and she made me feel better after my disappointment . My hair is very thick so it took her time to comb and style. I was very happy with the end result and it looked a lot better after she gave it a good trim. I will definitely go back to get my hair done. Thanks Elsa!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️”
If you’re looking for a Black hair salon that has a community-like vibe—yes, a place where stylists would remember your name (including the style you had from your last visit), then Nunu’s Hair Salon is the one for you.
Aside from the great hairstyles that they can do for you, the stylists here also take time to teach you about haircare—something that isn’t as common at other salons.
You can also conveniently buy those hair care products here if you want to be extra careful about what you’re applying to your hair.
What we liked about this hair salon is that our appointments always start on time. Even better, the stylists always finish ahead of time, making it easier for us to stick with our other plans throughout the day.
Nunu can also work on your hair extensions. The team can even help you decide on which style to go to, especially if you’re looking for a low-maintenance one. There’s even free coffee while you wait.
We also noticed that their prices stayed the same as last year, which we really appreciated.
However, they’re only open five days a week. Be sure to book your appointments ahead of time, as slots fill up quickly, especially on Saturdays.
Pros
No price increase in recent years
Appointments start on time
Serves free coffee
Offers haircare education
Skilled with hair extensions
Cons
Open only five days a week
Saturday slots can fill up quickly
Fair price point
“Love going to Nunu’s. She knows what I like and I always leave feeling confident and beautiful. Her prices are fair, the hair is great quality, and she’s fast too! Highly recommend.”
“Really awesome service. They give good advice about hair care and always accommodating. They have allot of selections of hair, hair product and beauty essential. I love coming here. Thank you Nunu and Patricia, you’re the best! Highly recommended”

Since our friend had been raving about Mashia Braids’ braiding skills (the name gives it away), we decided to check it out too.
From the moment we arrived, we knew that a well-charged social battery was needed, as the stylists here are really chatty. For our introverted friends, it’s best to manage your expectations or consider visiting another Black-owned hair salon instead.
However, their chattiness also comes with an advantage. We didn’t have a hard time discussing our preferred style, and even bombarded them with lots of questions about maintenance.
We appreciate that they offer a variety of hairstyles here. However, don’t expect hair coloring services and extensive straightening services here at Mashia.
On a lighter note, it’s easy for you to book your chosen services online. Simply visit their website, select the desired service, choose a convenient date and time, and pay a deposit to confirm your booking.
We also appreciate that the site provides complete details, including prices and durations for each type of service.
Just take note: Mashia Braids is quite popular, especially among the younger crowd. Last-minute or walk-in appointments won’t guarantee you a slot.
Pros
Skilled braiding services
Friendly stylists
Offers a variety of hairstyles
Cons
Chatty atmosphere may not suit introverts
No hair coloring services
Final look is always neat
“Mashia did an amazing job on my sew-in! She was professional, gentle, and washed my hair thoroughly. She paid great attention to detail, and the final look is super neat and exactly what I wanted. Highly recommend her!”
“This was my first time ever getting my hair done and I was so nervous but it turned out so good and Mashia was so patient with me. Pricing was very fair and a lot more affordable than some other places I had contacted when I was inquiring. She was very accommodating when I told her that I’m a hijabi and require a male free environment; she ensured that no appointments were booked for males while I was there and also let me know all the other precautions she took as well. My favourite part was when she did the hot water thing after finishing the braids. Can’t wait to be back and experience this all over again!”
The most popular Black or African American hairstyles include cornrows, afros, conk, hi-top fade, box braids, and dreadlocks.
What Black hairstyle lasts the longest?
Box braids are likely one of the longest-lasting Black hairstyles available. Some people can even keep it for a few months.
Do Black hair salons accept clients with other hair textures?
While these Black hair salons specialize in textured hair, most of the stylists can still work on other hair types and textures too.
Do I need to schedule an appointment at a Black hair salon?
If you’re planning an intricate hairstyle, booking an appointment is highly recommended. Meanwhile, walk-ins are available for basic services such as trims or blowouts.
